This vacation, give your kids a chance to set the travel agenda

FOR many international students in Shanghai, vacations mean exotic locations, five-star hotels, and resort-style, exciting activities running morning till evening. Summer, with its lazy stretch of 6-8 whole weeks of non-school, is a welcome opportunity to dive back to Europe for many expats and reconnect with families and friends. And to take a massive hit to your wallet.

However, for those looking to economize on their summer holidays while still managing to take a break from Shanghai, a one- to two-week vacation in Asia is probably the most practical option. And who better than the kids, to choose where to go? Speaking to my Year 10 students, top favorites — for cheap places to stay, friendly locals and amazing food — are definitely Vietnam and Thailand.

Students at this age are able to make sensible decisions about spending. My suggestion: Give the kids a budget for the total cost of the holiday and let them plan it for you. They can use websites such as Tripadvisor, Flight Centre and Agoda to find accommodation, read reviews, check maps and plan a few activities during your stay. Students’ recommendations: an elephant ride in Laos, swimming with manta rays in Malaysia and cycling around temples in Cambodia.

Your children will relish the opportunity to take control of the family holiday and let their imagination fly. It might surprise you what they choose. When I asked a South Korean student in my Year 9 form about his dream destination in Asia, he unhesitatingly replied “the Philippines.” He’s never been anywhere in Asia outside Korea and China, so I was curious why. “Because I like the ocean” he replied. Simple things.
