The real story behind the novel ‘Loser’ is friends are for life

STUDENTS in MYP English have been reading the novel “Loser” for this last unit.
Do you know what “loser” means? It stands for being bullied, which, means no friends. Zinkoff, a little boy, is a loser. He has no friends to play with, no friends to eat lunch together and no friends to talk to. Going to school is never exciting to him. Labelled “the loser” hurt him a lot. His life is filled with sad emotions.
Then, one day a shiny light shone through his cloudy life. It was his friendship with Andrew Orwell, his neighbor.
The story starts like this. It was a normal day, like any other, but there is a game between teams. The game is soccer, the sport that Zinkoff really liked to play. He was on a team called “The Titans.” Zinkoff didn’t expect to win, he just wanted to play with other students. Unexpectedly, the Titans win the game and everyone gets a golden trophy. In the book it says, “Zinkoff has never won a trophy before,” meaning it was the first time he was a “winner” instead of being a “loser.” Also, the book says, “It is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen.”
Zinkoff’s behavior as a winner is a bit weird, and his gestures seem a bit strange. For example, the book says, “Zinkoff sees the other Titans kissing their trophies, so he kisses his too,” suggesting he doesn’t know what to do. While he is extremely pleased with his trophy, he decides to give it to his friend, Andrew. Zinkoff must have felt some sadness in giving away the trophy because he really likes it. However, I also understand Zinkoff’s behavior. When other students bullied and ignored Zinkoff, Andrew didn’t.
Being a friend is much better than winning a game. The result of the game is forgotten quickly, but friends remain with us for our whole life.
