Taking action to save world’s water
AS World Water Day was on March 22, our school would like to be more eco-friendly. Linked to the alarming issue of contaminated water, this is another that we cannot ignore. Plastic and paper waste is a global problem that affects the Earth’s ecosystems in a very grave way.
Assuming that we have 170 school days per year, 1,500 students in our school and everyone buys two bottles per day, this means that we will waste 510,000 bottles every year. That’s not even including staff members.
Many of you have heard the environmental consequences of plastic waste before, so listing the countless impacts here is pointless. We all know that this type of waste only causes negative effects, yet we still allow this amount of waste to be produced every year.
The use of paper cups next to the water containers also contributes to the immense amount of waste created.
There is a very simple and easy solution. Reusable bottles. If everyone brings their individual bottles to school, uses the water containers and avoids buying the single-use plastic bottles, we can all truly be more environmentally friendly. There is nothing too challenging about carrying a bottle to school, yet so many are too lazy to do this despite the fact that we know and understand the impacts of inorganic waste.
This is the reason why we strongly encourage people to bring in their own reusable bottles. We will be selling water bottles and stickers in the buildup to World Water Day. Along with Blue Day, where we are encouraging everyone to pay 10 yuan (US$1.45) to dress in blue, this will raise funds for Water Aid and all the great work they do worldwide.
There will also be an art installation on World Water Day were we ask our school community to put any used plastic water bottles to create a visual piece of art that raises awareness of how many water bottles are used. Please start collecting plastic water bottles that you see and bring them in on World Water Day to add to this.
If all of us do this little task, we can make a significant difference in our local community.
