Students whip up appreciation for culinary arts
Concordia students are discovering that through skill development and practice, anyone can be a master chef! Working in the newly developed culinary arts lab, students as young as 10 years old are becoming proficient gourmets as they explore the art and joy of cooking.
The Master Chef course, one of many middle school co-curricular programs, goes beyond recipe books to help students build competence and confidence in the culinary realm. Students are mastering practical concepts of food preparation, including safe food handling, knife skills and proper use of appliances. They are building independence and learning useful skills for today and the future.
The first module of the class has students building an impressive repertoire of healthy snacks, appetizers, main courses, and even desserts. Future iterations of the course will delve further into in various cuisines and explore fusion tastes inspired by student interest. As students continue to offer input, the ideas for expanding the use of Concordia’s beautiful teaching kitchen continue to develop.
