Structural keys to fostering great minds

TODAY, many parents have their children attend robotics and other science classes, regardless of cost; at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Affiliated School (XJTLU-AS), this kind of curriculum is standard, as well as an example of specialization diversity.

XJTLU-AS has created a variety of science classes, including Lego Robot Programming and Construction, Innovative Design and 3D Printing, Scratch and S4A Visualization Open-Source Programming, Cell Phone APP Inventor Development and Application, Digital Geographic Information Application, Tri-Mode Science Practicum, Visualization Digital Modeling, and Digital Measurement and Digital Microscopy Technology Research.

Because it has such a wide variety of science-orientated classes, Shanghai Daily has taken a closer look at XJTLU-AS.

Environmentally friendly campus

XJTLU-AS is located at the foot of the Shangfang Mountain, on the bank of Stone Lake, in the Wuzhong International Education Zone. The sprawling campus covers a massive expanse of land, totaling up to roughly 160,000 square meters of ground, and is eastern China’s largest, most environmentally natural campus.

XJTLU-AS is comprised of five sections: kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, and international high school. There are 55 classes, and nearly 1,600 teachers and students. The school is a blend of Western and Eastern education styles combined into a five-pronged curriculum, which provides students with a comprehensive education that will not only increase their knowledge, but also enhance their creativity.

Deep university leadership

XJTLU-AS is the site of a cooperative exploration between the Suzhou Education Bureau and Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University to investigate the development of basic education and the innovative practice. XJTLU-AS has Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University’s most valuable international education resources — the extension of college education exploration. Based on its administrative success, XJTLU-AS is striving to achieve the goals of helping students’ achieve healthy growth and obtain knowledge; creating a diverse teaching model; and establishing one of China’s most innovative and valuable five-year-system internationalized schools. It provides its students, from 18 months to 18 years of age, with a basic education based on their individual talents and personality that will develop them into “strong, healthy, and educated future leaders.”

New STEM laboratory

Many students say that their favorite place is the STEM science laboratories, which includes the Digital Science Lab, Digital Geography Lab, Robotics Lab, 3D Printing Lab, Model Airplane Lab, Digital Art Lab, and more. These laboratories help students develop strong learning methods that will benefit them in the future.

Other schools are envious because XJTLU-AS students can make reservations to attend class in the different high-end science and technological innovation labs at XJTLU, where they can experiment with college students and listen to the professor’s explanations. The in-depth laboratory curriculum and studies are not only pushing forward a revolution in teaching and learning methods, it is also improving the likelihood of students choosing a first-rate domestic college of their own accord.

High-end development platform

XJTLU-AS is engaging in strategic cooperation with many authoritative international organizations, such as the United States’ FIRST Public Authority Scientific Innovation Group, Apple Education, Intel Education, Lego Education, HP Education, and many more in an effort to allow students to experience the cultural influence of Fortune 500 companies and develop their international world view, all within their own classrooms. In the 2015 World Robotics Conference FRC Competition, XJTLU-AS competitors won the prize for best structural design. This year, XJTLU-AS participants were nominated for the FTC East China Contact Prize. On May 8, XJTLU-AS undertook the East China auditions for the 2016 FIRST Project Challenge. A total of 110 teams and more than 1,000 robotics masters from Shanghai, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces will enter the competition. Aside from this, XJTLU-AS’s robotics club will travel to the Australian Global Robotics Invitational. Through the exposure of students to an internationally acknowledged science and innovation sports platform, XJTLU-AS is enriching the assessment model for basic education and is constructing a more meaningful life for their students.

XJTLU’s executive principal Xi Youmin said: “When you arrive at XJTLU-AS, you will have a unique educational experience, and you will be amazed at your immense potential. You will experience the joy of growing up, spread the seeds of your dreams, and enjoy the power of your wide-spread wings.”
