Service front and center for students at Concordia
SERVICE has been a very important aspect of my education at Concordia. The faculty not only encourage service but embody what a service-oriented community looks like, often working aspects of service into their classes.
For example, in my AP Language and Composition class, which would seemingly have nothing to do with service, we did a unit on food and sustainability. My teacher, Mrs Lavender, focused the entire unit towards what we can do to eat more sustainably and stressed how change lies in every one of us. In my AP Environmental Science class, we learn about environmental issues and pressing problems. Our teacher, Mrs Love, never fails to remind us that we need to be the change we want to see in the world.
Our education is founded on the grounds that we must become leaders to change the world for the better. This can be seen in our educational travel program, TrIBES, where Concordia promotes service through trips to various locations in China. We students not only come to understand the “real” China, but we also have the opportunity to help people in the country we live in. The most meaningful service I have done happened on my TrIBES trip to a welfare center in Duanmin where we took care of kids with mental disabilities. I learned that “kids with disabilities” (the way society may describe them) are in no way defined by their disorders and all have unique and shining personalities.
At school we also have a choice of co-curricular activities which are all geared towards developing our servant leadership skills. We learn world issues, try to find solutions, and actively make changes that are benefiting the world. Through all this, we are learning to be leaders who serve in ways that best utilize our talents.
