SUIS seniors bound for world’s top universities

With summer fast approaching, many graduating high-schoolers will soon embark on the next stage of their education careers — university. Shanghai United International School’s Gubei campus is one of many institutions around Shanghai where graduating pupils are preparing for the exciting transition into higher education.

Students at the school’s Gubei campus have had a tremendously successful year in terms of university admissions. Many in this year’s graduating class have been accepted into some of the world’s top universities, including University of Cambridge, University of St Andrews, Durham University, Imperial College London, University College London; University of California, Los Angeles; University of Southern California, University of Rochester, Mount Holyoke College, McGill University, University of Toronto; as well as top Asian schools such as University of Hong Kong and University of Tokyo.

Together, these students have received merit-based scholarships in excess of 2.5 million yuan ($403,349). What’s more, 88 percent of university-bound students received admission offers from their top-choice universities.

Given the relatively small size of the school’s graduating class — which this year includes 52 seniors — these are definitely impressive results.

The school’s dedicated team of professional university guidance counsellors deserves credit for such fruitful results. These counsellors begin working with students in their junior year on the university application process. The team includes three full-time university guidance counsellors who meet students regularly to discuss their post-secondary options, application details and potential career paths. Parents are encouraged to get involved as well.

When not working directly with students, the school’s counselling team collaborates with higher-education institutions around the world to host on-campus university fairs and arrange informational sessions with admission representatives.

The dedicated counsellors at SUIS Gubei are constantly learning and expanding their own knowledge by attending professional development sessions and college counselling forums, including conferences arranged by the International Baccalaureate program and the Overseas Association for College Admission Counseling.

The global college admissions landscape is always changing and students at SUIS Gubei are privileged to have counsellors help them at every step in this exciting, yet sometimes stressful, process.

Since the school was accredited by the IB foundation in 2010, and graduated its first batch of students in 2012, SUIS alumni have attended universities around the world, including those in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and France, to name just a few. Teachers and administrators at SUIS Gubei take pride in cultivating intellectual curiosity, a spirit to community service and the skills needed for success in college and life beyond, including critical thinking and analytical skills.

SUIS Gubei students are well-prepared for real-life challenges because they don’t live in an academic bubble. Instead they get to know the real world through the balanced and well-rounded IB curriculum, as well as the school’s philosophy of developing a whole person through activities both inside and outside of school. To this end, art and science fairs, school drama productions, charity fundraisers, field trips and other programs are all major parts of student life.

Students leave SUIS both personally enriched and armed with an internationally-recognized IB diploma. They know that the sky is the limit, especially when it comes to university admission.
