Robotics club takes student engineers to next level
IT seems like every week I discover amazing new pieces of technology in Mr Klammer’s room. Among other subjects, Mr Klammer teaches physics and engineering at Concordia. I have taken many of his courses, such as calculus, physics, and computer science, all of which will help me in the engineering field. My overall impression of these courses is that teachers at Concordia, like Mr Klammer, put a lot of effort and resources into making these programs phenomenal.
Recently, my ROV robotics team competed against schools from across Southeast Asia in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Underwater Robot Challenge at the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Hong Kong. Competitions like the MATE/ROV provide students with hands-on experience that cannot be mirrored in a classroom environment and it develops abilities that can be applied to many engineering fields.
At the beginning of this year, I only knew the Java programming language quite well; however, after working on the programming for our robot I now am capable of programming in several other languages that I was not well versed in before. Overall, the hands-on experience that this club provided helped me to apply the more theoretical applications that I learned in the classroom to the real world. I believe all students should have these types of opportunities.
For me, participating in ROV robotics has helped me to come to a better understanding of what I want to do in college and in a job later in life. Not only have I been guided towards an engineering degree by the programs offered at Concordia, I have expanded my knowledge of the subject areas enough to help me be successful in university.
