One big, happy community at SCIS

WHEN I think of Shanghai Community International School, Pudong campus, the first word that comes to mind is community. I mean, it’s even in the name. Community comes to mind because I hear it so often; it really is what the school is consistently known for amongst its students, teachers and parents. But as an IB student I must ask: What does community really mean?

For the last nine years, my definition of community has evolved from the simple definition of “a group of people who share common beliefs and goals” to a group of people who embrace differences, work together to achieve and help others achieve their goals, and maybe most importantly, deeply value and foster relationships. As I reflect upon all these years, it is easy to see how extensive these values are among the students, teachers and parents.

When you think about it, it’s an odd paradox, finding such close friendships and community in a foreign country with people from all over the world, moving in and out, amidst the fast paced, rapidly changing Shanghai scene.

I think it’s an experience I won’t fully understand and appreciate until later in life.

Now, here we are, graduation. We are closing one chapter and opening the next. Our small community is now going global — spreading all over the world to take on exciting challenges, adventures and successes in life. We are well prepared though. Through SCIS we learned how to say hello to new people, say goodbye to friends, build relationships, cross borders and languages, travel, work hard, excel, achieve, and most importantly, to just be good people. I can’t imagine better preparation for life than our experience here.

We are going to miss it. We will miss seeing our friends at the bus stop every morning. We will miss saying hi to teachers as we pass in the hallway. We will miss all of the school lunches, not because of the delicious food, but because that was where our closest friends were made. And yes, we may even miss the homework that every teacher so thoughtfully gave to us. As our small community goes global, I truly hope and believe that our friendships and connections will continue. We will always be, in our hearts, SCIS dragons.
