New family rises to Cardboard Challenge

THIS is my family’s first year at Concordia and first time living abroad. Our transition to Shanghai has been very smooth so far. Everyone has been very welcoming, and the school has had many events we’ve been able to get involved in, which has made it easy to get to know people in the community. The Cardboard Challenge the school recently held in its Concordia maker space was one such campus event that we were excited to participate in.

My kids, who are six and nine years old, begged to go to the Cardboard Challenge, which I learned was part of a global event that has over a million kids from 70 countries participating in creative learning.  They had heard about the event from their teachers, who must have talked it up very well. So, after our first parent teacher conference, we walked over to the new space in the Phoenix Center and dove right in. Everything we needed for our cardboard adventure was there, and the kids wasted no time, putting their imaginations to work.

Back home in the US, my husband builds his own off-road race vehicles, so of course the kids wanted to build a race car from the cardboard materials provided. And that’s what we did.

It was a great experience to see my kids come up with ideas of what to put on the car and how to create it all out of cardboard. We loved working together to come up with a concept and experimenting with ways to make it work.  We left that day with a multi-colored cardboard roadster and some fantastic family memories. We can’t wait for the next challenge!
