Moments of happiness encourage me to keep on volunteering

For me, charity is one of the most important things I get to do my school, YCIS. When I was new at the school, I found out students were encouraged to do at least 30 hours of community service every year. Charity work was completely new to me, however, I have enjoyed community service work so much that I end up doing way more hours than needed.

There are two charity projects I have been involved in that I would like to talk about. The first one is supporting the Shanghai Healing Home, an orphanage, each week. Going there every week became part of my routine and it’s something I love to do. Playing with the kids and making them laugh is one of the best feelings in the world. As you go there on a regular basis you start to familiarize yourself with the kids. After each visit, everything around you feels lighter because you know you’ve done something good for someone else.

Another charity activity I was involved in was traveling on a YCIS-organized Seeds of Hope trip. Last year, the trip took us to a local primary school in Lixian. There, we had to come up with games to play with the kids and teach them some basic English. My group did something very simple: We taught them how to make paper airplanes. The kids were amazed and had so much fun!

What I like most about charity work is how it makes you feel when you help someone else. It’s important because you were able to make someone else’s life a little happier. The smile on the kids’ faces when they saw the airplanes fly made everything worthwhile, and moments like these encourage me to keep on volunteering.
