Love for books starts with right motivation
THE modern-day world is filled with activity and distraction. When a book is so good a kid chooses it over the myriad other options in their life, you have started the process of creating a life-long reader. The love of reading comes from positive experiences with books. Quality books are the books that kids choose to read instead of playing games on their computer. The motivation to read is different for every kid. Our job as librarians, teachers, and parents is to help kids find their motivation.
Some kids are motivated by the human desire for a shared experience. These kids are the ones who love to discuss a good book with their friends or a teacher. Book clubs can help kids read a diverse selection of books because the group or the leader is choosing the books the club will read. Telling and listening to stories connects us with the people in our lives. Book clubs provide readers with the dual motivations of reading a good book and sharing our lives with our friends.
Some kids are motivated by the desire to know more about a topic they are passionate about already. Maybe your daughter loves movies and wants to learn how movies are made. Her reading motivation will be driven by the desire to know more about her passions. She needs access to a school library with a diverse collection of books selected to reflect student interests like movie making, costume design, or script writing. Keeping her in books that feature the topics she loves will keep her motivated to read.
Some kids are motivated by a good book recommendation. Picking a new book to read can be a daunting task for some kids. Talking to a librarian or teacher about the books he has loved, hated and not finished will lead to better recommendations. Frank Serafini, an American literacy professor, says: “There is no such thing as a child that hates reading, just children that have not found the right book.” Asking a librarian or teacher to help with book recommendations can be the bridge a kid needs to connect with his next favorite book.
