Festival full of MADD people

MAGNIFICENT. Amazing. Dramatic. Dazzling. Magical. The best Dulwich International festival is definitely the music, art, drama and dance festival, otherwise known as MADD.

MADD is an incredible opportunity where each Dulwich school sends Year 5 and 6 students to another Dulwich school to participate in workshops which finishes with a group performance. This year, MADD was hosted in Dulwich College Seoul and the theme was “Magic, with a big finale piece of Thriller, by Michael Jackson.”

On April 20, 40 Dulwich College Shanghai students flew to its counterpart in Seoul. They were very welcoming, with a magical performance every morning and evening, as well a red carpet with “paparazzi” on our first day of practice and workshops. It was really fun to pose for the camera with my friends.

It was so interesting to see how our schools are different and yet the same. For example, while our house colors are the same, their houses are named: Sejong, Alleyn, Seacole and Shackleton.

Each morning we arrived at the school around 8am and separated into our various ensembles to work with both independent professionals and various teachers from the Dulwich College international network of schools. I participated in rock band, singing in a group made up of students from Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai and our teacher from Minghang campus. We successfully completed three different songs.

While I was working with the rock band group, other Shanghai students participated in choir, orchestra, drama, dance and art. It was really interesting to hear about everything they were doing when we’d get back together at break and lunch times. We all made friends with students from various schools. Some of us had previously met at the Dulwich Games, Year 5 MUN conference, and at last year’s MADD festival! It was great being all together.

On the final night, all of the different groups, orchestra, choir, rock band, art, drama, and dance, came together to create one incredible performance showcasing everything we had learned and worked on over the past four days.

All of our hard work paid off and the performance was fantastic! Each ensemble did such an incredible job and had a great time on stage.

The show itself lasted a total of 90 minutes, and all of the students celebrated with a disco and dinner afterwards.

I think that all of the students and teachers that participated can agree that the MADD festival 2017 was a magical experience for everyone involved!
