Everyone can lend a hand in defeating bullies

BULLYING is an epidemic, and it needs to be stopped. Bullying is very common among teenagers.

I often witness many situations of bullying — cyber bullying, verbal bullying and even physical bullying. Whenever I witness them, I stand up to the bully. I know how it feels to be bullied. Bullying should not be tolerated as it can hurt the victim emotionally or physically.

I was once a victim of bullying, and I have to say, it did affect me greatly. “Stupid,” “Just go die,” the bullies hissed as I fought back tears and tried to swallow the lump in my throat. I sank to the floor, with my arms wrapped around myself. Tears rolled down my red-hot cheeks uncontrollably. Their laughter echoed in my head and it wouldn’t stop. I felt vulnerable, weak and small. Sometimes, I questioned myself, “What did I ever do to those bullies?”

When things got more serious, my friends told the bully to stop and it felt as if a massive weight was lifted up from my shoulders. Even though the bullying stopped, the sight of him everyday torments me, and brings back the horrible memories of my Grade 7 life. If I see someone being bullied, I would make the bully stop because being a victim of bullying does not feel good.
