Bell rings on another year

Shanghai’s strong collection of international schools have been busy this summer. Some have renovated their facilities while others have added new features like a 3D printing suite — all in an effort to provide the best education possible.

Dan Jubert

Head of school at Shanghai Community International School Pudong

Greetings and a warm welcome from Shanghai Community International School-Pudong campus. We had an exciting summer of renovations, which resulted in a brand-new, state-of-the-art campus serving students nursery through 12th grade. Students are thrilled with the new look as each division — Early Childhood, Lower School, Middle School, and High School — has their own separate floors, classrooms, and unique areas.

SCIS is and always has been a family school, and through our growth and change, we have kept this core belief that school is an intimate place where each student is nurtured and challenged. Our distinctive setting in this cosmopolitan city affords us a student population consisting of over 40 nationalities, creating an exceptional environment to develop an understanding of people from around the world.

I welcome back all of our students and families in what is sure to be a banner year at SCIS Pudong.

International schools gear up for new semester

David Walsh

Principal of Shanghai United International School Hongqiao-Gubei International Stream

A warm welcome to all our students and parents, both old and new, to the new school year at SUIS Hongqiao-Gubei.

This semester, as part of the Hongqiao-Gubei development program on both our campuses Hongqiao (Primary) and Gubei (Secondary) there has been tremendous investment in renovations, new classrooms, new equipment and new facilities from theaters and gyms to online archives for the upgraded libraries. These upgraded facilities reflect our continuing popularity and increasing student numbers on both the Hongqiao and Gubei campuses.

We are looking forward to our students benefitting from all these positive changes. As all our existing students are aware the Hongqiao-Gubei educational program is based on the two interacting pillars of our rigorous academic program (with the worldwide-respected IB PYP, IGCSE and IB Diploma qualifications) and our community program including a superb range of extracurricular activities.

Elizabeth Randall

Superintendent of Early Childhood Education, YCIS

At Yew Chung International School of Shanghai, the start of the school year is an exciting and special time.

To align all of our Early Childhood Education educators with the philosophy and objectives of our kindergarten program, we recently held our 4th annual ECE conference.

This year, the theme of our conference was “The Critical Role of the Early Childhood Teacher” and we focused on how teachers, in working with young children, support children’s learning and development and facilitate better learning outcomes. After the conference, our staff, myself included, left inspired, ready to begin the new school year.

In all of our education program, but particularly in ECE, building relationships with our new and returning parents is vital to success from the start.

YCIS’s ECE programme helps form the foundation in each child’s learning journey, and it establishes the path that guides our students to success.

Our mission statement encourages you to develop a passion for learning so that you keep an open mind and continue to learn no matter how old you are. Tom Kline

Director of school of Western International School of Shanghai

WISS is back to school for its 10th year and is brimming with excitement for the year ahead. Not only will 2015-16 bring celebrations for our big birthday, but it will also see continued academic, arts and sporting success as our students capitalize on the tremendous achievements of last year.

After our largest and most successful graduating class ever, WISS is adding to its reputation as the only fully authorized three-program IB international school in Shanghai. We have added the IB Career-related Pathway — making WISS the only school in Shanghai and one of just 24 schools in the world, where you can study all of the IB programs.

Our new Design Wing has kicked off to a great start and students are exploring the world of computer aided design, seeing their creations come to life in our fully equipped 3D printing suite. Added to our academic accolades, our premier league Stoke City Football Academy and ISTA Performing Arts Academy have been far more successful than we could have imagined.

Damien Charnock

Head of Dulwich College Shanghai

We are delighted to welcome all our students and families back to school for the new school year. I hope you have all had a restful and fun-filled summer break and that you are facing the new year with a sense of anticipation and excitement. I want to extend a particularly warm welcome to our new families. We are delighted to welcome you into our community and we are looking forward to getting to know you all. We hope you will very soon become fully involved in the life of our school and enjoy the many opportunities that it offers.

We have been delighted to welcome all our new staff to the school. Over the past week we have been conducting a full induction program for them, to familiarize them with the school and its ways, as well as life in Shanghai and China. I know that they are looking forward now with pleasure to meeting their new students and their parents.

I wish you all a very happy, interesting and successful new academic year.

Tan Thong Howe

Head of school at Shanghai Singapore International School

Since the end of the last school year, the ayis, shifus and teachers have been getting ready to welcome you back to school. From upgrading and sprucing up the facilities and equipment to designing fantastic learning programs for you, all of us have you as the VIP of the school.

Learning takes center stage in SSIS. Be it in the classrooms, science labs, gym or Merlion Cafe, the learning never stops. You will continue to have the chance to learn together with your friends in projects and team activities.

The teachers are no longer just the “providers of knowledge” but they will also challenge you to be critical thinkers and to work in close collaboration with your peers. The wonderful teachers in SSIS will get you ready for the real world.

Another core piece of learning in SSIS is character development. We will provide you with values-driven education.

Have a great time in SSIS.

Lesley-Ann Wallace

Principal of Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong

Welcome to another exciting and challenging year at Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong. We’ve had a busy summer upgrading our facilities and preparing for what will be a full and eventful year, full of opportunities.

I encourage all students to be ambitious in everything you do this year. There is no limit to what you can achieve, and you can get better every day. Whether your goal is to lift your academic grades, make one of the touring sports teams, or make a real difference as part of a service project, set ambitious goals and put in the effort to achieve them. The rewards will be well worth it. I am, once again, very proud of last year’s graduating students who achieved excellent results in the International Baccalaureate. Congratulations to all of our graduates who are now settling in to the next stage of their learning journey at many of the top universities in the world.

I hope everyone will take inspiration from them.

Kevin Foyle

Principal of the British International School Shanghai, Puxi

After the excitement of our 10-year celebrations, we are eagerly awaiting the start of the new academic year, which will again be filled with a rich variety of exciting adventures for our students.

Our growing school community will continue to focus on delivering our three promises of a warm welcome, exciting experiences and academic achievement as we challenge them across a variety of academic and extracurricular programs.

The new school year sees the launch of The Juilliard — Nord Anglia Performing Arts Program. It will further enrich our music, drama and dance provision to give students the finest performing arts education. Over the summer, the number of schools across the Nord Anglia education network expanded from 35 to 41. This has created further opportunities for our students to explore the world online, in-school and through international experiences as they continue to be active contributors to a global society.

Gregg Pinick

Head of school at Concordia International School Shanghai

I AM overjoyed to welcome our new and returning students to the start of the 2015-16 school year at Concordia International School Shanghai. This will be our 18th year serving expatriate families from around the city. We are looking forward to another great year ahead.

Over the summer, we implemented some exciting campus improvements as a way of reinvesting in the school and allowing us to better serve our students and the community. This year we have expanded opportunities in our fine arts, world language and STEM-related courses with remodeled art and drama rooms, a brand-new culinary lab and newly constructed maker’s spaces. We have revamped our outdoor learning areas with the installation of a running track and state-of-the-art turf sports field and by expanding the Founder’s Garden lawn for students and families to enjoy during school and on weekends.

I believe it is going to be a great year.

Paul D Wood

Executive principal of YK Pao School Secondary Division, Shanghai

I hope you were all able to do something enjoyable and worthwhile during your summer holiday, and I hope you are feeling rested and ready to learn. All of us here at YK Pao School are excited to welcome you back for another great school year.

I am new to the school as well. I grew up in England and studied chemistry at the University of Manchester before pursuing scientific research at Harvard Medical School, the Canadian National Research Council and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

I later realized my future lay in teaching and subsequently I received a BEd from the University of Ottawa. I taught science, French, math and Theory of Knowledge at schools in Yokohama, Ottawa, Dar es Salaam and Guangzhou. I was appointed High School Principal at the American International School of Guangzhou and then the International School of Beijing.

Here’s to a wonderful 2015-16 school year.
