Being part of a team builds confidence

BEING a part of the Phoenix badminton team has been an amazing journey for me. I care greatly about the sport, and it has been amazing to see this dedication and love reflected in my teammates. From the time I was a timid freshman to now, a senior soon to finish high school, I’ve felt at home on our school’s badminton courts. Throughout those years my team has felt like a family, a support network that extends far beyond badminton to weekend hangouts, homework help, and mental encouragement.

Before high school, as a singles player, badminton had always been an individual sport for me. However, in my freshman and sophomore year, through our daily practices, team dinners, and tournaments, I was able to see the true impact of being part of a team. With everyone contributing their skills and support, we brought home medals, and I was able to win individual gold for women’s singles.

In my junior year, I had the wonderful opportunity to be team captain and take on more responsibilities in encouraging and training the team. Leading our team through the season put me in a position to not only work hard myself but also to lead others through example. Ultimately, our hard work paid off as our team won the bronze medal at APAC, and I managed to take home another individual gold for women’s singles.

Being a part of the team has impacted my school years in unthinkable ways. I’m so grateful for the Concordia athletic programs which have taught me to be confident, focused, and team centered. I know I will miss Concordia badminton after I graduate!
