Athletic coaches who have shaped successes on field

EARLIER this school year, I competed in the 2016 APAC Cross Country Tournament and won the Girl’s Individual Championship. While I was extremely happy to receive the award, I know my success was due in part to the support of my coaches and my fellow runners who have been like a family to me.

Our coaches have genuinely invested in our successes as individuals and a team. Head coach, Bishop, has an amazing ability to recognize talent and fuel a drive towards improvement in every runner. She has built an unbreakable family united through hundreds of miles, pasta parties, and unsightly tan lines.

Schuitman, our other coach, has modeled a positive, patient, collaborative, and motivated mindset that has guided us towards realizing our goals. Our coaches’ love and concern for the wellbeing of every single team member will continue to inspire me long after I graduate.

Concordia’s athletic program and participation in APAC has given me the unique opportunity to travel and compete in Guam, Taiwan, Manila, and Thailand. These trips have not only given me the honor of competing against other dedicated and talented athletes, but also established an international community bonded by a sport that requires immense discipline and willpower.

This cross country family was built by coaches and generations of teammates that celebrate one another’s talents. It is one that has taught me the difference between running and racing — between finishing and winning.
