At WISS, students learn that we share the planet’s resources
THE International Baccalaureate (IB) Program has a strong focus on environmental awareness from the Primary Years Program through to the Diploma Program.
It is incorporated into the curriculum and is not simply an add-on initiative. Students are guided to be conscious of their impact on the environment and to explore measures they can take as individuals and as a community to protect the environment and our planet. Students are constantly involved and engaged in these topics: they are active recyclers at WISS, they advocate for efficient use of resources, they try to prevent food waste in the cafeteria and they present their ideas in exhibitions such as the Grade 5 PYP exhibition and the Grade 10 personal project exhibition. The Primary Years Program has a unit of inquiry dedicated to this very subject: Sharing the planet, an inquiry into the world’s resources and one’s rights and responsibilities in the sharing of these resources. Some grade 10 personal projects have revolved around eco-hotels, energy saving electronics, clothing lines made from recycled fabrics and more. WISS also partners with Green Initiatives, a social enterprise committed to sustainability, and runs the Fiber Project, a fabric recycling project. WISS also has a sustainable community center in Cambodia, which has been created, funded and built by the WISS community. Each year, WISS secondary students travel to Cambodia to work on the land and in the community. The building is built with environmentally sustainable practices, with solar power, water recycling systems and waste management programs in place.
