At BISS Puxi, change is in the hands of the students

AT BISS Puxi, our students learn about energy consumption and conservation across all ages. Outside of the curriculum we hold awareness days over which provide a good opportunity for students to engage in issues such as energy conservation.

Some of our students are particularly passionate about making a positive difference in becoming a more sustainable school and formed an Eco Committee last August.  Made-up of entirely of students, the committee divided some eco projects into smaller sub groups. One of these projects focuses on energy conservation. The group met with teachers and members of the leadership team in order to discuss how, as a school community, we could reduce energy consumption.

In order to actually reduce energy consumption, students are designing a logo to place above light switches and AC units in the school building. Jenny Tang in Year 12, one member of the Eco Committee admitted that “raising awareness and engaging the school population was challenging but also a rewarding process.”

In order to evaluate how effective their impact will be, members of the group gathered monthly utility bills for the school and were shocked at the high cost of running a school.

“We found out that after staffing costs, energy bills are the highest cost and so it makes sense to reduce our use both for the environment and for efficiency of the school’s budget,” said Jenny.

The benefits of student participation in eco efforts within a school community are endless.

The project is an excellent opportunity to work for a better future with our students, and make us realize that they often have the best ideas of what will work and how to make something successful. Students have been able to identify wider connections between the inefficient use of air conditioning and air filters in classrooms on days with bad air quality. It makes no sense not to be able to open the window because of bad air outside when running the air conditioning and purifier systems actually generates more electricity consumption, often sourced by dirty, coal-fired power stations in China. Step by step, our students are eager to make a positive and more sustainable change at BISS Puxi.
