A real taste of Spain in Shanghai

THIS month, the Year 9 students of Spanish at BISS Puxi went on a cultural trip. First we went to Instituto Cervantes on Anfu Road, a place to further your Spanish or even begin to learn the language.

It has a library and an exhibition room and provides a nice range of activities. There, Alberto taught us about their resources, including their website; the books are great for kids, adults and people with different interests. Our time in the library was very interesting and made us realize how much we can still learn. We then attended a presentation about Spanish culture including food, clothes, traditions and festivals.

We also watched a hilarious Spanish movie called “Ocho Apellidos Vascos” and Vanesa told us about the key differences among the regions in Spain. She also quizzed us for some prizes.

At lunch, we walked to Azul, a restaurant on Wukang Road, where we met chefs Angel and Daniel. They taught us how to prepare some traditional dishes and we all got to make three tapas with their help. First, we made empanadas, a Spanish dish, super easy to make and tasted amazing. The second dish was a bruschetta and was easily everyone’s favorite. Last but not least, we made a Peruvian dish called potato causa with egg, avocado, onion and herbs. Before leaving, we were also served paella, a Spanish favorite amongst many.

It was a fantastic opportunity for us to communicate with other Spanish speakers living in Shanghai and do things we don’t often get to do. It helped us understand the importance of learning another language.
