Going ‘soft’ with weddings, babies

BAOSHAN District in northern Shanghai has more than just heavy industry, an efficient logistics center and a great port. The district government is now going to great lengths to develop its “soft power.”

“The industrial restructuring and revival plan for Baoshan is vitally important, while the tertiary industry is the key point to adjust the industry,” district official Zhang Bin tells Shanghai Daily.

Tourism is booming in the district, bringing enormous businesses and job opportunities, Zhang says.

Once a flourishing water town during ancient times but later destroyed by wars and battles, a now-reviving New Luodian Town demonstrates the vibrancy of the district and its development of the service sector.

Located in northern Baoshan, Luodian blends old and new charm.

“Around Lake Malaren in Luodian New Town, some northern European flair is featured,” Zhang says. “Tourists can also enjoy some old architecture in the town, including new Baoshan Temple and Wendao Collection House. Last but not the least, Luodian offers visitors a chance to experience the rustic way of life in Tianping Village.”

Most recently, the district government has found a new niche in what it calls the “sweet economy” — providing matrimonial services, maternity care and pediatrics.

According to statistics from the Shanghai Wedding Trade Association, among 145,000 newly married couples in the city, each spends 160,000 yuan (US$19,440) on average on wedding banquets and other services. And the expense is growing by more than 10 percent every year.

Baoshan saw the opportunity. Since it’s relatively far from downtown Shanghai, it has many advantages in spacious areas and beautiful natural scenery, and it can offer one-stop service to customers. Usually, all the wedding centers provide free shuttle service for wedding attendees.

According to statistics from the district government, since 2011 it has spent about 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) supporting matrimonial services. Last year alone, total income from the wedding business in Baoshan reached 800 million yuan.

AMA Palace

AMA Palace on Panjing Road, Luodian Town is a newly opened wedding center that provides tailor-made weddings.

“Born in the 1990s, I can understand the need and thoughts about weddings by young urbanites better,” says Shao Haoliang, general manager of AMA Palace. “So when we were planning and designing the wedding center, I put in many new ideas.”

Shao noted that young people tend to have simple but exquisite weddings with flair.

“In the past, people always sent return presents with candies and cigarettes, but now we are considering more adorable choices like Chinese knots, honey in delicate bottles or heart-shaped soap,” he says.

The wedding center will make a unique wedding according to couples’ needs, interests and budgets. A typical wedding package includes cinematographer, catering, wedding venue decoration, flower arrangements, make-up service and more.

The base is a sophisticated venue and facilities. The wedding center covers 68,000 square meters including one main building, a big lawn, a chapel, six villas of various styles, European-style gardens, a lake and a man-made waterfall.

Maternal and child care center

Giving birth in downtown Shanghai hospitals can be difficult due to the baby boom these years. Hospitals are usually full of patients while the waiting line can be very long. Doctors often don’t have enough time to talk or provide care because they have to meet dozens of new mothers before noon. However, private hospitals downtown cost big money that ordinary people find hard to afford.

China Welfare Institute International Peace Maternal and Child Health Hospital, a leading hospital specializing in maternity care and pediatrics, opened its branch in Baoshan in October last year offering international-standard facilities and great value.

The hospital, China Welfare Institute International Peace Maternal and Child Health Hospital — Lake Malaren Branch, covers 27,000 square meters and has an inpatient capacity of 100. The décor is simple but warm in white and light blue tones, while all the furniture is eco-friendly.

From great cleanliness and facilities to the friendly and caring doctors and nurses, the hospital works hard to provide a stress-free environment for its patients and ensure mother and newborn start their new life together in the best circumstances possible.
