Traditional theaters given a new touch
SMALL-THEATER drama, which refers to dramas presented in a small theater, has been flourishing in Shanghai for years.
This year, 10 plays of traditional Chinese operas will also be staged in small theaters for the first time to nurture young theater producers, scriptwriters and enthusiasts for traditional operas.
Traditional Chinese operas are in danger of fading away because the artists are aging, so are the devoted audiences.
Small-theater performances with innovative performing styles, new elements and good interaction with audiences are considered a new way to revive the ages-old art forms.
The festival, entitled 2015 Shanghai Experimental Theater Festival, will be presented from November 30 to December 6 in Shanghai Drama Arts Center. Academic seminars and public lectures on arts will also be held.
By the end of May, traditional opera producers and troupes can apply online (www.shchineseoperas.org) with their plays for the festival. Around 10 candidates will be selected.
“We do not lack promising young performers of traditional operas,” says Zhang Ming, president of Shanghai Center of Chinese Operas. “What we truly need are innovative producers and scriptwriters.
“In addition to discovering new talents in this field, the festival will also serve as an open platform for exchange and interaction with younger audiences.”
Subjects will be more related to the lives of the young generation while the plays will be presented in diversified forms, she adds.
Tickets of the festival will be sold at a more affordable price to attract and foster young Chinese opera fans. Lectures on distinctive aesthetic charm of the theaters will provide audiences an insight into the arts.
