Richard Strauss front and center for performance

THE Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal (OSM), conducted by Kent Nagano, will highlight the Canadian Culture Week of the Shanghai International Arts Festival in late October.

The OSM will present three Richard Strauss works including “Death and Transfiguration,” “Sinfonia Domestica” and “The Four Last Song,” pieces that were carefully selected to offer a broad spectrum of Strauss’s creative output, according to Nagano.

“Death and Transfiguration” and “Sinfonia Domestica,” as one of the earliest and latest tone poems of Strauss, help define the symphonic tradition of the great composer before he turned exclusively toward the operatic form.

“The Four Last Song,” created in 1948 after World War II, is widely taken as a celebrated masterpiece of Strauss’ final works. Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko will join the orchestra on stage for “The Four Last Song.”

Nagano, renowned for interpretations of clarity, elegance and intelligence, was appointed music director of the OSM in 2006.

Nagano says he has enjoyed immersing himself in the Quebec culture. “Because the sensibilities, sensitivities, languages and history — the cultural values — are the same as Europe from where the great majority of our symphonic repertoire comes,” he says.

“The orchestra plays with its own Quebec style, which is much closer to the European aesthetics of tone, color and breathing than any other North American ensemble. Yet the OSM also has the technical brilliance and perfection often associated with American orchestras,” he adds.

The previous music directors of the OSM like Igor Markevitch, Wilfrid Pelletier and Dafael Fruhbeck de Burgo, all brought depth and breadth to the orchestra’s repertoire and tradition.

“Rather than music period, or composer, most of the performing artists including myself search for works of exceptional, timeless, quality. Quality, is more important to us than a particular period of composition, or nationality of composer,” says the conductor.
