New season brings riveting performances

THE Shanghai Oriental Art Center has released the program for the upcoming 2016-17 season, which will open with Teatro alla Scala’s (La Scala’s) concert opera featuring Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” on September 3 under the baton of South Korean conductor Chung Myung-Whun.

Simon Boccanegra will be played by Simone Piazzola and Amelia/Maria Boccanegra will be played by Carmen Giannattasio.

La Scala will be performing Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” on September 4 featuring soprano Eva Mei, mezzo-soprano Michelle Breedt, tenor Michael Shade and bass Detlef Roth.

The renowned opera house from Milan also has one of the best ballet companies in the world, which will be staging three performances of the classic ballet “Giselle” and two performances of the contemporary ballet “Cello Suites” from September 8 to 11 together with La Scala’s orchestra. The latter was choreographed by Heinz Spoerli to Bach’s cello suites No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6.

Charles Dutoit will be conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Dvorak’s “Cello Concerto” and Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1” on November 6, while Daniele Gatti will lead the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as it will perform Berg, Bruckner, Debussy and Stravinsky in January.

German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter will give a recital featuring works by Currier, Mozart, Respighi and Saint-Saens on October 15, while German violinist Julia Fischer is presenting works by Dvorak, Schubert and Brahms three days later.

The new season will also see the return of Shakespeare’s Globe. The company, which presented “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Shanghai two years ago, is staging “The Merchant of Venice” this time around.

The new production was premiered at Shakespeare’s Global in 2015, and the performance in Shanghai will be directed by Jonathan Munby and starring Jonathan Pryce and Rachel Pickup.

Gesher Theater from Israel is staging the play “Village” written by Joshua Sobol and directed by Yevgeny Arye on November 4-5.

Acclaimed choreographer Lin Hwai-min is also coming back with Cloud Gate Dance Theater’s production “Moon Water” from September 1 to 4, which also features Bach’s “Six Suites for Solo Cello.”

Tickets for the majority of the performances are now available.
