Loads of choices highlight winter TV season
THE winter TV season looks like a winner. A wide range of genres including reality TV, talk shows, insight news and dramas will hit the airwaves in the next few weeks.
One of the highlights will be “The Story in ER,” a documentary-style reality series set in the emergency room of Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital.
The series, to be aired on Dragon TV at 10pm every Friday starting on December 26, documents the experiences of patients and their families, along with medical staff in the ER. Shooting began in October with 78 remotely controlled cameras in the hospital’s wards and lounges.
According to the show’s producer, the laughs, tears, pain and stress people experienced are real. It also provides insight into humanity, medical disputes and the current state of China’s health-care system.
Starting on Sunday at 9pm, Dragon TV will air “Dancing With the Stars,” a new reality competition featuring celebrities. Stars who don’t have any dancing experience will compete against one another. The show will run every Sunday until the big finale.
Celebrated news TV anchor Cui Yongyuan will helm the original news program “Eyes On.” Known for his sense of humor and quick wit, Cui will share his opinions on the hottest current events.
On December 31 at 7:30pm, Dragon TV will also present a local New Year’s celebration featuring a singing competition between the winners of “Chinese Idol” and “The Voice of China.” South Korean heartthrob Lee Min-ho, Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming, rocker Zheng Jun and pop singer Han Geng will also perform.
Anticipation is high for actor Sun Honglei’s new action series “The Legendary Sniper.” It’s set during China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) and follows a Chinese soldier who vows to protect his nation and people against the Japanese. It will debut on Dragon TV at 7:30pm on Christmas Eve.
At 7pm on January 1, the Entertainment Channel will host an awards show honoring the city’s outstanding TV and radio anchors.
Now in its fourth year, many young anchors will be given awards to mark their contributions to the industry. The winners will also present special acts and micro-movies.
Children’s channel Haha TV will premiere “Happy Birthday to You,” a program for the city’s newborn babies and young parents at 9pm on Fridays beginning in 2015. Experts will give tips on raising children. On January 1 at 5pm, Haha TV will air a children’s concert to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.
“Road to Star,” a reality series of young male idols, has entered its final rounds so viewers who have been following along will not want to miss the drama and surprises sure to come.
It is now airs at 9:20pm every Friday on Guangdong Satellite TV. Only those who can sing and dance well, look handsome and have a distinct personality can survive the competition.
Star China will stage the final episodes of “Road to Star” while the second season of “Sing My Song” is also ready. It will be aired on China Central Television 3 at 7:30pm every Friday starting on January 2.
The format of the show’s first season was purchased by British ITV Studios in April — the first time a domestically produced talent show was brought overseas.
Tian Ming, producer of “Sing My Song,” says TV producers in the United States and UK are now working on new shows based on the format. “We are also considering developing an industry chain to spur domestic music,” he adds.
The new season will continue focusing on original music and talented Chinese composers. The best 40 original Chinese pop songs will be recorded on four albums and performed at a grand music gala.
Contestants for the new season range from 15 years old into their 50s. Most of their songs depict real experiences from blind dates to Spring Festival travel.
