Famed Shakespeare troupe to stage ‘Henry’ plays

AUDIENCES in Shanghai will soon have an opportunity to experience three of Shakespeare’s most renowned historical epics, performed by one of the world’s most celebrated theater troupes.
Coming amid the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death in 2016, Great Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will hold its first major tour in Shanghai in the new year, when it will perform its acclaimed new productions of “Henry IV” Parts I and II, and “Henry V.” Together, this trilogy paints an epic, comic and thrilling vision of a king’s rise to power.
The “Henry” cycle charts Prince Henry’s journey from his rebellious youth to a famed warrior king. Along the way, Shakespeare paints a rich panorama of medieval English society, from its cloistered royal court to its dingy alehouses.
“The shows coming to Shanghai are three of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. Shakespeare’s plays seem to have a special ability to speak to people all over the world,” says Gregory Doran, the company’s artistic director.
“They tell a powerful story, charting a historical family saga, the coming-of-age of a young man, and explore universal themes of war, love, friendship and duty,” he says.
Established in 1961 and based in Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon, the RSC is one of the most accomplished companies in the world performing Shakespeare’s works. With an annual budget of around 60 million pounds (US$89.63 million), the RSC stages about 12 new productions every year and six of them are always works by Shakespeare, according to Catherine Mallyon, the company’s executive director.
The upcoming shows in Shanghai will feature 25 performers from the company. Among the cast will be Olivier Award winner Antony Sher (as Falstaff) and Alex Hassell (as Prince Hal, later Henry V).
The shows scheduled for Shanghai are an outgrowth of RSC’s cultural exchange program with China. This program also involves a project to translate classical Chinese plays from the time of Shakespeare into English to be performed in the UK.
