Exhibit unites architects from across the globe

AS a major event of the 2017 Festival Croisements, “Mission Trans Missions — Architecture-Studio & Young Award-winning Chinese, Arab and African Architects” is underway at the Qian Xuesen Library & Museum.

The exhibition, which features a cluster of models, pictures and multimedia works by Architecture-Studio explores how architects can confront and improve life.

It has selected works created by 27 young architects from China, Africa and Arab countries who already garnered international awards in architecture competitions.

The exhibition was held at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale and received high accolades.

Architecture-Studio, organizer of this exhibition, was established in 1937 and has been involved in business in China for more than a decade. The French firm opened in Shanghai in 2004 and in Beijing in 2007.

It aims to render solutions for sustainable development and eco-cities in China and to build a platform for architects from different countries and backgrounds.

But still it was surprising when Architecture-Studio chose the Qian Xuesen Library & Museum to host the exhibition.

Qian (1911-2009), a preeminent Chinese engineer, contributed greatly to aerodynamics and rocket science. Recruited from MIT, he joined Theodore von Karman’s group at Caltech, which founded the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

But later he returned to China and made important contributions to China’s missile and space program.

It is rarely known to the public that Qian was also engaged in architecture. His interest started early in the 1950s. During his later years, he enriched his theory of “a city of water and mountain” and proposed the idea of combining the garden with a forest of high-rises. Organizers say this exhibition echoes Qian’s theory.

Date: Through June 24, 10am-4pm

Venue: Qian Xuesen Library & Museum, 1800 Huashan Rd
