Exhibit for father of modern ink-wash

A solo exhibition of Liu Kuo-sung's art is on display at China Art Museum through May 20. Considered the "father of modern ink-wash painting," Liu was born in 1932 in Anhui Province. He moved to Taiwan in 1949 and completed his art training at the Taiwan Normal University in 1956 and became a pivotal figure in the modern art movement that strived to overthrow the prevailing conservatism.

Liu is also the principal founder of the "Fifth Moon Group," which catalyzed the modernist art movement. Together with the group's members, he incorporated Western art concepts and techniques, successfully placing ink-wash painting on the path to modern innovation, for which he has been called the father of modern ink-wash painting.

The exhibition at China Art Museum is a retrospective that features his representative works from different periods of his career.

Liu has held more than 90 solo exhibitions. His works have been collected at more than 70 museums around the world, including the British Museum and the Palace Museum in China.

Besides painting, Liu is also a lifetime educator. He is the chair professor at the Taiwan Normal University. He was the head of the Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a visiting professor at the University of Iowa and Wisconsin.
