Austria pianist Rudolf Buchbinde presents Beethoven sonata cycle in Shanghai

BEETHOVEN’S 32 sonatas is now presenting in seven concerts as a series at Shanghai Symphony Hall by legendary Austria pianist Rudolf Buchbinder till March 19.

The 71-year-old pianist has presented Beethoven’s sonata cycle live for more than 50 times all over the world, and he considered it no difference when deciding to bring it to Shanghai as well.

“Why not?” he said, “Audiences all over the world are the same. They go to a concert because they love music.”

Buchbinder doesn’t have a particular logic or story lines when arranging the 32 pieces into the seven concert; instead, he tries to include as rich variety and contrasts in every single concert, so that it won’t bore audiences.

“I cannot name a particular guideline of how I arranged it. But if you have presented for more than 50 times, you will know the best way to organize them,” said Buchbinder.

Buchbinder enjoys a wide repertoire from Bach to contemporary music. He has documented this broad artistic range in more than 100 recordings, many of which have won awards. His readings of the works of Beethoven in particular have set new standards. With his cyclic performances of the 32 Beethoven sonatas, he has contributed to the development of the performance history of these works across several decades.

Sonatas to Beethoven are just as concertos to Mozart, in Buchbinder’s view, as they serve like record of the composers’ live.

“You will find Beethoven’s mood in every piece of his sonata,” said Buchbinder, “I don’t like the theory of dividing Beethoven’s works into three phases. I see ups and downs throughout his life and pieces.”

Though widely appreciated for his recording of classics especially Beethoven, Buchbinder never listen to his own recordings after it is done, as he is much looking forward to his next interpretation.

“My interpretation is changing every day. Music is not like painting. When a painting is done, it is always the same. But music will always be different even in the hands of the same interpreter. That’s what makes music alive,” said Buchbinder.
