The British entrepreneur thriving in Yiwu

In 2005, Nigel Cropp, a British man, came to Yiwu small commodity market in east China’s Zhejiang Province to teach merchants English. He took Taishan as his Chinese name because he always gives people the impression of being “as stable as Mount Taishan.”
In 2008, Taishan married his student Wu Qinyan. In that year, Taishan put the marketing knowledge he had learned in university into practice and founded his own import and export company.
With Yiwu, the world’s leading small commodity market, as a platform, Taishan’s business got more and more prosperous. In 2012, he opened a Western restaurant, taking advantage of the foreign merchants situated in Yiwu.
Since November 2014, the China-Europe freight train service originating from Yiwu has opened 11 routes, providing a new channel for Taishan’s import and export business. From Christmas decoration to household articles, he has exported many “Made in China” products to European and American countries and regions.
“The ‘Made in China’ products are of high quality and low price, and are still gaining larger market as the quality is constantly improving,” Taishan said.
The continuous improvement of the business environment has attracted many foreign merchants, like Taishan, to start a business in Yiwu. At present, Yiwu has more than 1.8 million commodities exported to 219 countries and regions in the world. Around 15,000 foreign traders from more than 100 countries and regions are stationed in Yiwu, and more than 400,000 foreigners come to the city to do business every year.
