Technology X Fashion: Crossover Collaboration between Samsung Electronics and Chinese Independent Designer

An Interview with Dido Liu, the designer of deepmoss

In recent years, technology and fashion is no longer two separate worlds. The integration of the two has become a prevalent trend as technology continues to enhance fashion and fashion inspires technology. Samsung Electronics, a leader in the electronic communications sector, is no doubt one of the important promoters. Since 2011, Samsung has frequently involved in the global renowned fashion events, including Vogue Fashion's Night Out, London and Paris Fashion Week, and has continued to be intrinsically embedded in the current fashion conversation by cultivating strong relationships among the fashion elites.

This year, Samsung turned its attention toward China and rode on the timing when Galaxy S6 & S6 edge has just launched to carry out the crossover collaboration with Chinese independent designer, Dido Liu, for the first time during the 2015 Shanghai Fashion Week.

S: What is your idea to cooperate with Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 edge for the deepmoss AW 15/16 collection?

D: All designers strive for effortless beauty and simplicity. It takes a commitment to innovation, a journey of exploring new concepts, techniques and materials, to result in the kind of craftsmanship that evokes anticipation as to “what’s next”. While I and my brand - deepmoss, have just started on this journey, Samsung has long demonstrated how relentless innovation leads to customer anticipation and excitement for what’s next. This is the initial reason I would like to cooperate with Samsung.

More surprisingly, I find several amazing coincidences between Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 edge and my new collection. The theme of deepmoss AW 2015-16 collection is Golden Age. It focuses on the use of prints, including black-and-white which conveys a sense of minimalism and simplicity. Utilizing silk-screen printing techniques, the collection delivers both glamor and complexity for an eye catching impression. When producing the print, the wrinkles naturally produced from the process are kept intact and the round edgy finishing resembles the look of Galaxy S6 edge. I can see that we both are committed to the craftsmanship and innovation for the highest quality. Meanwhile, this collection is also practical and good for everyday wear – such a belief in “practical artistry” represents how Samsung views its commitment to delivering artistry in a practical way, with S6 and S6 edge.

S: How do you feel as the first Chinese designer who collaborates with Samsung?

D: Samsung Electronics a leading technology company with the spirit of innovation, seamlessly combining fashion, science and technology and life in its products. I appreciate Samsung’s commitment to cultivate fashion talents around the world. It is a great honor for me to present the “practical artistry” to the fashion lovers together with Samsung. Also, I am happy to try out Galaxy S6 edge during the fashion week and fall in love with it. Its detailed design that looks sleek and simplistic matches nicely to deepmoss and the collection. I use it to take photos and stay in touch with my models and partners. The incredibly vivid, bright and fast camera and new wireless charging technology deeply impressed me. This smartphone is a great breakthrough!
