Motto for progressive tolerance: ‘I Am Me’

THE 8th Shanghai Pride event will wrap up on Sunday with the 3rd annual Asia LGBT Milestone Awards. It is the first time China has hosted the awards, which honor achievements in the campaign for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual people.
The ceremony will pay tribute to events and people who contributed to the cause last year, including lawsuits that created milestones in the movement. In one, a female university student sued the Ministry of Education for failing to monitor words and phrases that discriminate against homosexuals in textbooks. In another, director Fan Popo sued authorities for blacklisting his homosexual film on major websites.
The theme of this year’s Shanghai Pride is “I Am Me.” It all kicked off last weekend with a film festival, an art and photo exhibition, a theater festival, a quiz night and several business forums.
Lending weight to the cause, award-winning British actor Ian McKellen, who was in town for the Shanghai International Film and TV Festival, met with the organizers of Shanghai Pride prior to returning to London. He recorded a surprise video message, encouraging the LGBT to carry on for gay rights and “Do It.”
Shanghai Pride was founded in 2009, one of the first LGBT groups in China, and it remains influential. It has expanded from a few social networking events to an extensive program of arts and business.
