Kia World Extreme Games will ratchet up the action

SOME of the world’s best action athletes will gather in Shanghai for the Kia World Extreme Games next month. It’s the ninth year Shanghai will host the event to be held at two venues from April 25 to May 3.

This year, the event will bring together more than 150 athletes from 25 countries and regions competing in BMX freestyle, skateboarding and speed climbing. Returning gold medalists Trey Wood and Jimmy Wilkins are among the athletes returning to defend their crowns.

For the first time in event history, Kia World Extreme Games will feature an elite group of skateboard street pros including world champion Chris Cole, Tom Asta and Jack Curtin.

Athletes will be vying for medals and a chance to earn a share of US$200,000 in prize money.

Apart from the venue at Jiangwan Stadium in Yangpu District, this year’s competition will feature some newly designed BMX and skateboard vert courses in front of Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong. A new street course for the disciplines of BMX and skateboard will be added. It will make use of an existing structure at KIC Plaza.

The design of the speed climbing wall will also be changed to upgrade the difficulty while providing a better viewing experience for spectators. Freestyle motocross, aggressive in-line skating and, for the first time, women's vert skateboard athletes will participate in demonstrations at the Oriental Pearl Tower venue and Jiangwan Stadium.

World Sport Group, an international sports marketing agency, has taken over as organizer. “We wanted to expend the scale and add another venue to attract more fans to the competitions,” says Hass Aminian, general manager of action sports, World Sport Group.

“Last year we put up a motorcycle show at the north side of the Bund, which proved to be a successful experiment and a great experience for the fans in Shanghai. We want to continue to raise the event to a whole new level.”

Mat Hoffman, BMX icon and sport organizer, says: “I’m so honored to be a part of this event. This year promises new levels of talent and courses and fans will witness the greatest athletes in the world, performing at one of our most authentic competitions.”

The organizer has also launched several interactive platforms for fans to get more closely involved with the event through video and photography competitions.

An extreme sports short video contest has been introduced where fans can enter the contest by downloading the MiaoPai app to their mobile device and shoot a video.

The winner will be announced on May 1. Fans can also enter the extreme sports photo exhibition. Submissions will be on display at Oriental Pearl TV Tower on April 23-29.
