Get inspired, get into the game

THE exhibition “Beyond Rubik’s Cube” opened to the public last week. Located on the fourth floor of Global Harbor Museum (3300 Zhongshan Rd N.), the show is divided into three areas — “Invent,” “Play” and “Inspire.”

Apart from appreciating Erno Rubik’s famous creation, visitors can create their own puzzle cubes, and see how the Cube’s principals have been combined with art and science.

In the “Invent” zone, a section titled “Cube Origins” displays the very first Rubik’s Cube, created in 1974.

In the “Play” zone, “cubers” of all skill levels can gather in the Solve Bar. Here visitors can also find instructions and tips on how to conquer the Cube.

In the “Inspire” zone, there’s a Cube decked with 18-karat gold, rubies, emeralds and other precious stones. Created by a fan in 1995, this Cube is worth an estimated US$2.5 million and considered the world’s most expensive toy.

“Beyond Rubik’s Cube” debuted at the Liberty Science Center in the US in 2014. Being the world’s first exhibition on the Rubik’s Cube, it attracted over 3 million visitors during its two-year North America run.

Shanghai is the first of three stops in China for the touring exhibition. It will remain in the city until February 26, with ticket prices ranging from 70 yuan (US$10) to 120 yuan. The locations of the remaining two stops will be announced at the end of the year.
