Forbidden City 600th birthday celebration

The 600th anniversary of the completed Forbidden City promises to be a grand event at the Palace Museum in Beijing.

Although the time of the event has not been announced just yet, the museum discloses that the exhibition will be based on 20 critical years on the history of the palace during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, showing how it was built, rebuilt, restored and reserved in those years.

At the central axis of Beijing, the Forbidden City was ordered to be built in 1406 by Emperor Yongle.

It was based on the style of the previous Ming Palace in Nanjing, which only has some ruins left from its former majesty.

In 1987, the Forbidden City was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

“Through the exhibition we want to show people how ancient people combined construction techniques and arts to create such a masterpiece on human history,” says Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum.

Meanwhile, a series of other events are going to be held at the museum this year to mark the anniversary.

One highlight is “China and Versailles,” an exhibition on the artistic exchange between China and France during the 18th century.

Relics collected at the museum, brought to China by French missionaries and envoys, will be displayed at the exhibition.

The museum says that the display is an echo to a similar event held at the Palace of Versailles in 2014, where Chinese relics were displayed.

Other events held at the museum this year will include an exhibition on the writer, artist and calligrapher Su Shi (1037-1101), and a special display on the painting “Night Revels of Han Xizai,” now widely deemed as one of the top masterpieces in China’s art history.

The Ceramics Gallery, which was closed in 2017, will be reopened at Wuying Palace this year, displaying more than 1,000 relics in order to explain the 8,000-year history of ceramic production in China.
