Euro shows headline 2019 AC Orange season

FOUR popular overseas musical productions are coming to Shanghai as part of the 2019 season of AC Orange. French Musical “Le Rouge et Noir,” English Musical “Evita,” “Cats” and “Romeo and Juliet” all top the bill.

With more than 20 major awards to its credit, the original Broadway and West End production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical “Evita” will hit SAIC Shanghai Culture Square on September 6-15, as part of its China Tour.

The musical charts the story of Argentine political leader Eva Peron, wife of Argentine president Juan Peron, from her humble beginnings through to the extraordinary wealth, power and status which ultimately led her to be heralded as the spiritual leader of the nation, and her eventual death.

The musical was first released as a rock opera concept album in 1976 and successfully produced as a musical in London’s West End in 1978. It won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical as well as a Tony Award for Best Musical a year later, while the theme song, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” quickly swept around the world.

French Musical “Le Rouge et Noir” will be on at Shanghai Culture Square on October 3-6. The musical created based on the Stendhal’s novel premiered in Paris. It features rock-style music and stage settings, which quickly gained popularity among the young generation online. This time the version in Shanghai will star young French singer Come (Lucien Carreau) as well as other young talents from France.

Both “Cats” and “Romeo and Juliet” visit the city prior to those new dates, in June, because their previous China tour was well-received.
