Big charity gig takes on cancer

NINE local bands will perform tomorrow to take on a big cause: cancer.
The “Rock vs Cancer” show will take place at Mao Livehouse.
The bands encompass a wide range of styles from the blues rock covers of “T N’ Ace” to the experimental drone sounds of The Other. Xiaoxinyiyi, En Route, Wheel of Fortune, The Cleft, Orange, The Spondees, and Limousine round out the lineup.
The show is being organized by local music lynchpin “Scottish” Mike Herd, who also sings and plays guitar with one of the groups playing the event, punk-pop group Xiaoxinyiyi. Herd also plays with Brit pop group Girls Like Mystery, writes a blog concerned largely with the local music community, and has organized many other shows (full disclosure: I’ve worked frequently with Herd on some of his projects).
All the money raised from ticket sales will go to The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research, a fund for research into bowel cancer named after the famous soccer player. This is the second concert Herd has worked on for this cause.
His reasons for choosing such a fund are simple: an ex-bandmate of Herd’s in the UK, Stewart Smith, died of the disease last year. He was just 28 years old.
“He was a really close friend of mine who shared more or less the same musical interest as me,” says Herd on the show’s Facebook site. He continues, “So this is how I hope to make up for that and also try to make it an annual thing as music was his big love too.”
Although the show isn’t going to take down cancer for good, it’s always great to hear about people coming together to take on something bigger than themselves.
