A new world of exercising: Gyms focusing on women

WHETHER you’re into boxing, aerobics, yoga or TRX, a number of fitness studios and gyms will not only help you shave off some fat but give you the chance to exercise among like-minded women.

Style Fitness

Style Fitness is a women-only fitness studio which was established last October and has already become popular among many expats in the city for its experienced trainers and a friendly community atmosphere.

The studio offers many new fitness programs such as Tabata, a 4-minute high-intensity interval training workout. Some classes are designed to focus on body parts such as hips, core and legs. The studio also has regular sessions for TRX (Total Resistance Exercise) suspension training. Boot camp classes are provided in different styles and levels for groups from fitness dummies to veterans. Most trainers and instructors are certified and have several years of experience.

“I will give you the best version of you that you’ve ever had,” said Mauricio Reyes, co-founder and head trainer who has been in the fitness industry for more than 10 years. He focuses more on the overall well-being of his members than just on their external fitness. The studio provides regular workshops on topics such as nutrition and health issues to help members maintain a healthy lifestyle.

At the moment, Style Fitness has launched a boot camp package, which will last for three months. Unlike other boot camps, participants just need to make a commitment of one-week workout at a time and pay as they exercise. The package is divided into three plans from silver to platinum. Each plan has three different stages, lasting three weeks in total with different targets including detox, weight control and toning. Each stage features a one-hour workout for six days a week.

The group class is limited to six members while private training sessions are available as well. As a bonus, the studio features an on-site therapy room providing many beauty services such as waxing, available for booking in advance.

Shanti Yoga

If you walk past Shanti Yoga, you may be forgiven for mistaking it for a café. Hidden in an old residential area a stone’s throw away from busy Nanjing Road W., the French décor boutique occupies three floors with a mood-lifting interior design. It’s a place with a relaxing atmosphere with soothing fragrances from oil diffusers.

Shanti means “peace” in Sanskrit as the co-founder Vinia Gong hopes the studio can be a peaceful resort for Yogis. Its white-and-blue logo is inspired by the ocean and the sky. The studio has two classrooms, one for up to 10 members and the other for up to three members.

Shanti Yoga provides a wide range of classes in different styles of yoga, including Hatha Yoga, Therapy Yoga, Detox Yoga, Vinyasa (Flow Yoga), Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga. Restorative Yoga is a basic course for beginners which is also suitable for pregnant women. The selection of gentle poses can help relieve lower back pain.

Therapy Yoga is provided for a small group only. The course aims to effectively relieve the tension around the neck, shoulders and back through a series of yoga poses.

Each class lasts for 60 to 90 minutes and booking is required. The course is taught in English, Chinese or both.

ZETNESS

Korean fitness guru Jung Dayeon is best-known for her FigureRobics, a series of effective yet easy-to-follow exercises. Jung joined hands with her Chinese partner and launched a fitness center at Hongqiao Park last October.

The center spans four floors with different rooms for Jung’s signature Figurerobics including exclusive new routines and classes for dance and yoga.

Each 45-min Figurerobics class consists of a warm-up, training and stretching. In class, one instructor will demonstrate each workout while the other will correct members’ poses.

The center features a constant temperature yoga classroom, the equipment area and a separate room for personal training sessions. The top floor terrace opens as an outdoor training section featuring artificial grass and fitness facilities along with an over 100-square-meter indoor classroom on the first floor.

ZETNESS will set a personalized plan for each member including diet, training frequency and even workouts at home to help members reach their fitness goal.

A comprehensive measurement including Body Mass Index and Body Fat Percentage helps examine the member’s progress over time.

The fitness center has its own café, which offers low-calorie food.

Princess Women’s Boxing Club

With Princess Women’s Boxing Club, founder Gong Jin hopes to promote boxing as a safe sport among women in the country. Established in October 2010, the club has attracted more than 1,000 members so far.

Gong used to be a boxer with a proven winning record in both professional and amateur matches. She started training for professional boxing at age 12. Gong believes that only a woman can really know how practicing boxing affects a women’s body, such as joints and muscles. Thus, all trainers in the club are female too.

The club offers group classes for different levels including core and strength training. All new members must take classes for one month before moving to the basic level in a bid to make sure the member is ready for the next stage without injuring herself. Private classes are available upon request.

Unlike other fitness studios, Princess Women’s Boxing Club holds regular internal boxing matches to improve members’ real combat skills and resistance to stress while matches with other local boxing clubs are organized from time to time.
