We would like to make a clarification concerning the "UN to use only simplified Chinese after 2008" story we published on our Website on March 23.

The story, which we wrote based on a news story in the Beijing Morning Post, stated that the United Nations will only use simplified Chinese characters after 2008, while it currently uses Chinese in the simplified and traditional complicated forms.

Our story, as well as the original Chinese story, aroused <a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/press/2006/03/23/un-to-use-only-simplified-chinese-after-2008/">many debates.

However, other Chinese reports later said that simplified Chinese has replaced traditional Chinese to become one of the six official languages of the UN since 1973, when the People’s Republic of China resumed its legal post in the UN.

Apart from the documents issued before 1973, all the official UN documents have been in simplified Chinese for more than 30 years, and the original complex form hasn't been used since then, the Global Times, a newspaper under the <a href="http://www.people.com.cn/">People's Daily, reported recently.

Chinese, which was traditionally written in a complicated form, was simplified after the Communist Party of China took power in 1949 and promoted the simplified form around the country in the 1950s so more citizens could be literate.

The traditional complicated form is still in use in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan regions.

The letter goes like this:

Dear Editor:

When I was reading the news as usual on your website today, I noticed that there was a small spelling mistake on the homepage, the description just under the cover photo:
A bilzzard hits the Beijing-Guangzhou railway line, delaying 30,000 passengers in the Beijing West Railway Station yesterday. – Xinhua

I think it should be blizzard here not bilzzard.

Sincerely Sean Xu

The online department has corrected <a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/editor/http://www.shanghaidaily.com/art/2006/01/20/237049/Blizzard_delays_100_000_railway_passengers.htm">the spelling of the caption.
The online department hereby posts two corrections for the newspaper on January 7 on behalf of the Metro Desk.

We misspelt a word in the story: "<a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/editor/http://www.shanghaidaily.com/art/2006/01/07/234831/City_lists_ancient_suburban_homes_as_historic_locations.htm">City lists ancient suburban homes as historic locations." It should be “Chongming County” instead of “Chongming Country.”

We also changed “Gift Tree,” a program name, into “Giving Tree” at the beginning of another story, "<a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/editor/http://www.shanghaidaily.com/art/2006/01/07/234864/Expatriates_donate_gift_bags_to_migrant_school_students.htm">Expatriates donate gift bags to migrant school students," to improve its consistency.

We have corrected them online.

Today we received two mails from a warm-hearted reader, William Cotton. He pointed out a mistake in a map of the Shanghai Metro network on our Website, and also gave us suggestions about how to improve it. The following are his two mails.

I like the English language version of your new map of the Shanghai Metro, which I found at: <a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/editor/http://www.shanghaidaily.com/download/1229-METRO-NEW.pdf." target="_blank">http://www.shanghaidaily.com/download/1229-METRO-NEW.pdf. I have printed a copy and will use it frequently.

Could I suggest two improvements, when you next come to update it?

I think it would be helpful to show the Huangpu River on the map. In that way people will know which stations are in Pudong and which in Puxi.

I suggest you also show the Maglev line at Longyang Road Station, so that people will know how they can get to Pudong Airport.

Things in Shanghai continue to get better and better!

Sincerely

William Cotton

------------------

I have noticed a error in your new map which I found at: <a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/editor/http://www.shanghaidaily.com/download/1229-METRO-NEW.pdf." target="_blank">http://www.shanghaidaily.com/download/1229-METRO-NEW.pdf.

The order of the stations on Line 1 going northwards from People's Square is:

- Xinzha Road
- Hanzhong Road
- Shanghai Railway Station

not as shown on your map. You may wish to make an amendment.

Sincerely

William Cotton

Here is the old version of the map. The error is marked by circles.
<img src='wp-content/metromaperrorcorrection.jpg' alt='Correction Map' />

The corrected map is at: <a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/editor/http://www.shanghaidaily.com/download/1229-METRO-NEW.pdf">http://www.shanghaidaily.com/download/1229-METRO-NEW.pdf.

We are really grateful to William.

Today, one of our online department sub editors Winny Wang was working on today’s Sudoku in Shanghai Daily, as her unique way of refreshing from the high pressure of writing stories. Suddenly, her joyful humming of music stopped. There is a mistake in the Sudoku.

There are two 9s in the third row of the puzzle. The rule of the game is to fill the grid with the numbers 1 to 9 so that each row, column and 3x3 block contains the numbers 1 – 9. This cannot be right.

The online department then notified the feature department, which is in charge of the game and comics of the newspaper. Shortly, they sent us the correct version and we would like to publish the correct puzzle below. Hope our readers can enjoy the game as usual.

<img src='wp-content/1206sudoku2.jpg' alt='Correct Sudoku' />

PS. This is also the first post in the "For the record" category. If there is any mistakes in the future, we would try to clarify that under this category.
