Call me Sports Girl

Shanghai Daily has just recruited eight new reporters and one administrator from hundreds of applicants to help the newspaper to develop. To keep our newsroom transparent to our readers, which is the main purpose of this blog, the online department has asked these new recruits to introduce themselves to you.

Please enjoy the fifth piece.

Hi, I'm Ma Yue, or Natalie. I came to Shanghai Daily as an intern earlier this year, a year-and-a-half after spending a summer vacation working for the paper's online department, back when ShanghaiDaily.com was still in its gestation period. I'm now working as a sports editor and do some reporting.

I'm an English major from Shanghai International Studies University, and I'm determined to become a journalist. I have been a sports fan for many years.

"Great power comes with great responsibility." – Spiderman's uncle

I guess it's the honor of having the right to judge and fight for justice that makes journalism attractive to me. It's more than a job, but a lifestyle making everyday new and helping me open up to the whole world, as NEWS comes from N for North, E for East, W for West and S for South!

As for sports, well, that's all about passion and glory! I haven't been personally involved in sports myself since I graduated, but I simply enjoy watching athletes competing purely and devotedly, and for some time, more against themselves than opponents, especially in track and field events. Glory is won along with a rival's full respects; legends are born every day to contribute to the sports chronicle. What matters is devotion, passion, confidence, determination, cooperation and spirit. Successful athletes never stop trying.

It's fun to watch sports, but the job is stressful as journalism a fight against time. Everybody is unique, though my life apart from news and sports doesn't differ much from others —— movies, books, music and exhibitions (All right, I admit that the tranquility needed has abandoned me for quite a time). I acquired strength from Dead Poets Society; learned about love from Indecent Proposal; formed dreams from Sommersby… and do expect some day to go out and see the world.

Life is to be tasted and enjoyed, though it's not always sweet and joyful. You know what Michael says (yes, that famous Schumacher):"Maturity means reacquiring the seriousness one had as a child at play." Let's enjoy life seriously.

And thank you very much to Martin Guo (editor of online department), Bivash and Lancy (sports editors)!

This is such an elegant and meaningful piece of writing! You have grown more mature and broad-minded than before. I declare myself a fan of yours and I am so proud that I have once been your classmate & roommate. My best wishes to your career!

Sincerely yours
Pig
