Victory celebration evokes patriotic sentiments

People across China were glued to their TV screens on September 3 to watch the gigantic military parade in Beijing celebrating the 70th anniversary of victory over Japan in World War II.

As one of the battlefields seven decades ago, Songjiang remembers the sacrifices made to achieve final victory.

District resident Jiang Guofan, 77, said his father died as a soldier in the war. As the son of a hero, Jiang watched the parade with pride.

“The military parade symbolized peace,” he said. “It was not a threat to the world. I hope younger generations will always remember the blood our ancestors shed for victory.”

Another resident, Xue Rengui, 75, told Shanghai Daily that he recalls the childhood trauma of being interrogated by Japanese soldiers.

Xue later served as a railway soldier for more than 10 years.

“At that time, our weapons were old and simple, with scarce ammo,” he said.

The nationwide event also touched the young generation.

“It was a riveting event that brought people together to sit and remember,” said Xia Guojun, a 26-year-old teacher.

Military aficionado Xiao Zhang, 30, said he was interested in seeing the new China-made weapons displayed for the first time in the parade.

The event showcased 52 types of new weapon systems produced by Chinese engineers and technicians, including the latest models of intercontinental nuclear-capable ballistic missiles.

Other cutting-edge weaponry included China’s new generation of tanks and sophisticated systems of radar, airborne early warning and control aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and satellite communication devices.

“The parade,” Zhang said, “was highlighted by fewer personnel and more equipment, fewer army troops and more troops from the navy, air force and the PLA Second Artillery Force.”
