Rice contest selects seeds for next crop
The annual rice contest took place in Songjiang recently and 14 rice producers from the district and from neighboring cities including Suzhou and Jiaxing brought their fine rice strains for contest.
After several rounds of selection and tasting, Songjiang’s early rice hybrid “Songzaoxiang No.1,” late rice hybrid “Song 1018” and another hybrid, “Nangeng 46,” cultivated by the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences took the top three spots in the contest and will be used as seeds for mass production this year.
The quality of rice is judged by appearance, taste and flavor. Ten rice experts used special lab equipment to test the shape, size and protein content of rice samples and gave their ratings on appearance, taste, flavor, texture and other qualities of rice cooked in the same condition.
“Songzaoxiang No. 1” and “Song 1018” cultivated by Songjiang Agri-Tech Development Center ranked first and second in glutinous texture and aroma. Their protein content is 8.8% and 9.1% respectively, much higher than other candidates and meeting the national standard for first-rate rice.
The third-prize winner “Nangeng 46” scored high in lustrous appearance, soft and supple texture, and protein content of 7.75%.
The three rice strains, dubbed “new generation of Songjiang rice,” will be widely sown across the district this year with a total acreage of about 2,000 hectares, compared with 333 hectares last year.
Due to changes in soil, air and water, rice quality is also changing. Some traditional varieties have lost their edge. That’s why Songjiang is holding a rice contest every year to select fine strains for mass cultivation.
More rice strains are being cultivated and planted in trial production, such as “Su 10-101” and “S66.”
Both are back-up seed crops. “Songzaoxiang No. 2” is also in trial cultivation and is better than “Songzaoxiang No. 1” in protein content and lodging resistance.
