Moonlake Hotel is an icon of modern art decor

NESTLED in an arm of Yuehu Lake and amid the green lushness of Sheshan Hill, the Homa Moonlake Hotel is proving a popular place for urban getaways and romantic interludes.

Its modern art decor offers an environment of solitude and relaxation.

The hotel, located in the eastern side of Yuehu Sculpture Park, features walls decorated by live plants. It is the first hotel in China to use belbien, a self-adhesive decorative film that features quality designs, durability and water resistance.

Art masterpieces can be seen in every corner of the hotel. A giant oil painting by Liu Shaohui hangs in the lobby. An abstract painting by Wang Yigang adorns a wall in a wing. Works by artists Xiang Qinghua and Liang Zhiqing appear on upper floors.

Each suite is decorated like a mini-exhibition, with sculptures, porcelains and original paintings.

In the honeymoon suite, a watercolor of playful children by painter Guan Weixing hangs. It has been included in the book “China’s Water Color Painting History.”

There is a work by Taiwan artist Lin Wanshi that depicts a night river crossing, and works by Sichuan painter Zhang Fazhi of karst mountain scenery of Guilin also feature.

One guest room features aboriginal artworks from Taiwan, crafted from stones, metal and wood. Taiwan artist Zeng Yongning’s “Spring” series is a collection of works in ballpoint pen, pencil and propene.

A tropical theme guest room is adorned with a giant painting by artist Li Changlong, depicting water and mountain scenes from Guilin.

Books and magazines on Songjiang culture and traditions are provided in every room.

Guests are offered free tours of the nearby Shanghai Yuehu Sculpture Park, which is famous for more than 40 stone, porcelain and bronze sculptures created by masters from 10 countries.

At the main entrance of the park is a huge sculpture entitled “Flying to Eternity.” It was created by a Bulgarian artist and sits alongside canary pines.

A big sundial beside the sculpture measures the movement of the sun across the sky. On each hour, a bell rings and music is played.

Yuehu Sculpture Park is divided into four gardens, celebrating the four seasons.

The spring zone features an opera stage built out on the water and a crystal palace. In the autumn zone, cobblestone pathways are strewn with golden tree leaves. It’s a popular site for wedding photos.

The summer zone features a sandy beach created with 5,000 tons of imported sand, flanked by trees up to 12 meters high.

A sightseeing deck built out from a giant old banyan tree affords an ideal location for bird-watching.

It’s the perfect spot for a romantic stroll on a moonlit summer night.

The winter zone features a pavilion in the center of the lake. Wintersweet planted along the waterway pokes its cheery blooms through the snow. The zone also features more than 20 modern sculptures carefully designed to blend in with the landscape.

One of the biggest highlights of the park is the opera stage. It is set off by musical fountains and can accommodate an audience of up to 1,500 people.

The glass palace nearby features some grotesquely shaped stones. At night, the lights of the palace sparkle like crystal on the water.
