Magic rooster a boost for Xinbang’s creative force

“Magic Rooster,” a children’s musical created and performed by Songjiang artists, premiered at Xinbang Community Cultural Center on August 15.

Xinbang is hailed as a “theater town” and is home to renowned playwright Lu Jun. It has also witnessed both professional and amateur dramatists’ creative endeavors in writing a number of good works and has witnessed the birth of a generation of performing artists including Niu Qiuzhen and Lu Haiyun.

The debut of “Magic Rooster” marks an extension of the town’s force in theatrical creation and performance. Yu Yue’e was the writer and members from Songjiang Qijia Youth Drama Club performed.

The musical is based on a reversal of common sense that it’s impossible for a rooster to lay eggs. Yu came up with an enticing plot: Grandma Zhang raised a proud rooster and a good-natured hen, and every day the rooster would crow and the hen would lay eggs. With summer approaching, she decided to cook the rooster for her grandson. But, to everyone’s amazement, the rooster began to lay eggs.

The play has been published in Play, a monthly magazine in China that publishes scripts.

“Since China’s opening-up to the outside world in 1978, both its modernity and people’s livelihoods have improved dramatically. But a society’s rapid development does cause some side effects and bad behavior at a young age is one of the problems. We hope the musical can awaken people’s longing for kind and good things,” said Yu.
