Happy Valley, Maya gird for new rival

SONGJIANG’S two signature theme parks – Happy Valley and Maya Water Park – will be upgraded this year to put them on a more competitive footing when Shanghai Disneyland opens this June, according to Overseas Chinese Town Group, investor in the parks.

“The Beauty of the Lake,” a live waterfront multimedia show, will debut at Happy Valley this summer. About the same time, the second phase of Maya, comprising about 30,000 square meters, is also scheduled to open.

Happy Valley and Maya are major tourism attractions in Shanghai. Last year, the two parks entertained a record three million visitors.

The “Beauty of Lake” project is designed by ECA2, a French company specializing in creation, production and engineering of large-scale events and multimedia performances. The high-tech show will be performed on the park’s 25,000-square meter water surface.

Set against stories from Chinese mythology, the show will be a combination of lights and shadows, water and fire, with the water curtains, fountains, music, 3D audio and color-laser visuals.

Happy Valley is now planning its third stage of development, with three European-style boutique hotels included in the 700 million yuan (US$107 million) plan. Scheduled to open in 2018, the third phase will be themed on the fictional paradise Shangri-La, with attractions that include the Himalaya Summit, Snowman’s Territory and Exploration Journey. In addition, a zoo will mark the first time that the park is introducing animals to visitors.

Meanwhile, the Gold Mining Town and the Bund attractions at the park will undergo renovation and will include full WiFi coverage.

Happy Valley will stage special celebrations this year for almost all festivals and holidays, including Children’s Day, Halloween and Christmas.

Since Maya Water Park opened in 2013, more than two million visitors have passed through its turnstiles. The second phase now nearing completion will feature a four-lane water turbo drop imported from Canada and delights such as Treasure Island, Kids’ Zone and Family Water Castle.

A Spain-themed hotel with almost 300 rooms is scheduled to open in 2018.
