Farmers sowing seeds of poetry

SHANGHAI’S first village club of rural poets has been established in Yaojing Village, Maogang Town. “It’s made up of farmers, who view the world and nature from a unique perspective,” said Lu Chunbiao, director of the Songjiang Cultural and Arts Center.
Their verses describe rural scenery, seasonal change, farm work and local celebrations. The club’s members get together once a month to share what they have written.
The village poets can draw inspiration from the past. The famous Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi (772-846AD) visited the village once and wrote a short poem about its idyllic landscape and the egrets by the river. That gave Yaojing the nickname “home of the egrets.”
“The bird has become the cultural symbol of the village and this anecdote encouraged us to set up this poets’ club,” the director Lu said. “Our poets may be amateurs but their emotions are real, down-to-earth and unpretentious.”
