Counseling for kids a big success

Qinyuan Psychological Counseling Center in Songjiang is developing a children’s care project under the district’s charity fund.

Since its foundation in 2014, 64 children and teenagers have benefited from the project. Most of them were abandoned, with parents passing away, missing, serving time in jail or suffering from physical impairments or serious illness. The lack of care is actually the biggest cause of insufficiency in the psychological status.

Zhang Chunjuan, a counselor on the project, helped a girl, Xiao Hua, whose father left to escape debts while her mother remarried into another family.

She went to live with her grandparents and didn’t see her mother for years and grew silent. Her mother was reluctant to meet her at first but Zhang was able to reconnect the pair. Xiao Hua was pleased and treasured the gift her mother gave her when they met.

Zhang also raised a donation for books, stationery and some daily necessities, which eased the financial status of Xiao Hua’s grandmother.

Xiao Hua was able to feel others’ concern for her and gradually opened their heart. Patience is the key. Counselors explore the children’s interests and open them up.

Xiao Li had a similar condition. Her father suffered from mental illness and her mother started a new family. She almost turned mute, remained indoors and would not communicate.

Counselor Wang Meiping discovered Xiao Li was a fan of Japanese animations. Their conversation turned to the cartoon and then to the Japanese learning. As Xiao Li opened up and talked more, Wang advised her to keep on with her Japanese learning, which she followed and made it her major in the vocational school.

Counselors guide children to relieve their psychological pressure through surveys, regular visits, lectures and group activities.

The survey found that children who received treatment have gone on to be more positive in life and resumed normal communication with other people.
