Collecting clothing for the needy
Nearly 1,500 pieces of clothing were collected in first five days of a donation campaign initiated by a community in Sijing Town to help underprivileged families.
The drive struck a chord with residents, who enthusiastically contributed clothes they no longer want nor wear.
Xu Wenjun, who started the campaign in 2013, said the number of clothes collected this year has already surpassed the totals last year and in 2013. Xu said he got the idea for the clothing drive from a similar campaign he saw in an online forum.
“The campaign in itself is no big deal, but it does reflect the caring hearts of people,” he said. “Many parents brought their children along to the donation center to teach them the value of recycling instead of wasting and the value of helping people less fortunate than themselves.”
All the clothes will be turned over to a charity volunteer association in Songjiang District for distribution to needy families.
