Celebrating victory with the ‘famous kiss’
Seventy couples, dressed up as sailors and nurses, lined up to form the numeral 70 and then kissed for 70 seconds at the Happy Valley theme park on August 30 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of victory over Japan in World War II.
They were recreating the famous photo of photojournalist Alfred Eisenstaedt, who encapsulated American euphoria over V-J day in New York City by snapping the picture of an US sailor kissing a nurse.
“We should cherish the peace that was built by thousands of Chinese soldiers and citizens seven decades ago,” said Yuan Yongjun and his wife Zhang Yuanqin, a Putuo District couple who have been married for eight years. “Beyond that, this kissing event gives us pause to sweetly recall our dating days.”
World War II inflicted an estimated 60 million to 80 million military and civilian casualties globally, or about 3 percent of the world’s population at that time. China puts its total casualties at 35 million.
