Autistic man creates a world with thread

MOU Qixing, a 20-year-old with autism, lives in a world of embroidery of his own making. In a small room in a charity center in Yongfeng, he creates cartoons with cross-stitches.

Mou’s father said his son began learning embroidery in 2011. He is now so obsessed by the craft that he once spent a whole night looking for a needle he had dropped.

Young Mou goes to the charity center every weekday, and then he brings embroidery work back home to continue stitching evenings.

“No one can disturb the schedule or he gets angry,” his father said.

Learning to stitch did not come easily for Mou. At first, he couldn’t distinguish colors or types of stitches. He had to learn skills such as backstitching and changing threads.

Center teachers Hu Guiren and Yu Yan initially selected simple cartoon patterns online for Mou and printed them out onto sheets of paper. In the beginning, they took his hand into theirs to guide the stitching.

After six months, Mou progressed to more complicated patterns and his hands became faster and more assured at stitching.

He is now able to complete an embroidery work in 20 days, using up to 30 colors of thread.

Mou doesn’t socialize much with others, nor talk a lot. But when asked about embroidery, he seems to come alive. “I feel very happy,” he said, his face breaking into a big smile.
